Mactan-Cebu International Airport’s Terminal 2 has nabbed an award at the World Architecture Festival, which concluded today in Amsterdam.
The 11-year old annual festival, which ran from Dec. 4 to 6, celebrates design and architecture from across the globe, and awards distinctions to winning designs in over 30 categories. Terminal 2 bagged the award in the “Completed Buildings – Transport” category.
The five-judge panel noted that the terminal was “a simple and elegant new airport that uses many locally sourced materials.” It added that it was well “integrated into the local area through the development of a local hub and a landscape plan.”
The festival’s judges also pointed out that the airport’s internal spaces are light, uncluttered, and that the design is capable of future extension. “It is clearly popular with the local community and this established a memorable travels (sic) experiences,” they said.
Cebu’s resort-themed airport, which opened early last year, was conceptualized by architectural and interior design firm BUDJI+ROYAL Architecture+Design. Its furniture was designed by Kenneth Cobonpue, whose clients also include Queen Sofia of Spain and Angelina Jolie.
However, the eye-catching structure hasn’t gone without hiccups. It experienced flooding problems in August last year that transformed its drop-off area into a mini pool after a heavy downpour.
Back in October, Mactan-Cebu joined Iloilo International Airport as one of the best in Asia in a survey by travel website Sleeping in Airports based on customer service, cleanliness, food options, and the ability for a traveler to sleep in the airport comfortably.
Both are a far cry from the country’s main transport hub, Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport, which many travelers complain is crowded, uncomfortable, and teeming with thieves. Airport officials, however, said that at the very least, it’s safe from lightning strikes.
