CEBUANA beauty queen Katherine Jumapao is going all in on her dream of becoming a professional basketball player after sending in her application for the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL).
A standout in the Cebu Women’s Basketball League who isn’t afraid to pit her basketball skills against men in several local ball clubs, Jumapao said she is ecstatic that women are finally getting a chance at showcasing their basketball talent at the pro level after the Games and Amusement Board finally granted the WNBL pro status a few weeks ago.
“Bliss fills my heart knowing that women can now showcase their basketball talent. This would further motivate little girls to know that their hard work is going somewhere — the big league,” said Jumapao, who was crowned Miss AAA Renaissance Cebuana 2018.
She also joined the Miss Cebu pageant in 2015.
Jumapao admitted feeling apprehensive at first, with questions like “Can I still keep up with the young ones?” nagging at her. In the end though, the chance to be a pioneer was too enticing to pass up on.
“I am taking this challenge because I want to be a pioneer in the pro league. WNBL's mission is also aligned to my advocacy on women empowerment and my sports campaign 'Move.' I will be able to influence more with this big mileage,” the 29-year-old explained.
With the deadline for submission of applications for the WNBL Draft set on September 30 and the draft combine to follow not long after, Jumapao shared she is hard at work training these past few weeks. She added that she also needs to adjust her game after playing primarily in the front court ever since her days playing for the University of San Carlos Lady Warriors.
“I do shooting and dribbling everyday for the past week. Need to increase accuracy on my mid-range shots. I also run and bike for cardio,” said Jumapao. (JNP)
