Cebuano rookie forward Leonard Santillan is steadily finding his groove in his first season in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) as he notched a career-high 21 points in Rain or Shine’s thrilling 95-93 win over the powerhouse San Miguel Beermen on Sunday afternoon.
Two days after putting up 14 points in a tough match-up against Calvin Abueva and the Magnolia Hotshots, the rookie from Lapu-Lapu City showed that he belongs in this league as he shot 7-of-9 from the field and added five rebounds while matching up against veteran forward and one-time league MVP Arwind Santos.
““Yung dalawang bantay na yun, grabe eh, si kuya Calvin at tsaka si kuya Arwind. Talagang mahirap bantayan,” said the product of the University of the Visayas after the match.
Santillan added that the trust that his teammates put on his shoulders have a lot to do with his impressive performances.
“Malaking tiwala talaga yung mga beterano sa amin na mga rookie. Yun, di namin binigo yung tiwala nila. Talagang buhat kami pag papasok kami sa court,” shared Santillan.
The reminders of his head coach, Chris Gavina, also rang in his ears, said Santillan.
“Consistency lang talaga. Yun yung sabi ni coach,” said Santillan. “Kung maganda yung laro mo last game, kailangan ganun din this game.” (JNP)
