ALL public hospitals in Central Visayas had been placed under "Code White" starting Saturday, December 21, 2019, in preparation for the Christmas and New Year Holidays, an official of the Department of Health (DOH) regional office said.
"For code white, there is expected personnel to man all trauma cases especially firework-related injuries at all times during the specified period in all DOH hospitals," said Dr. Shelbay Blanco, head of DOH Central Visayas Health Emergency Management Service.
Blanco said the Trauma Team should be on full alert at all times in connection to 2019's "Iwas Fireworks" campaign.
The DOH Central Visayas Operations Center will also be active during the holidays to ensure that there will be adequate personnel to handle urgent health incidents.
"Hopefully, we will have a decrease," said Blanco, who hopes that firecracker-related injuries will be lessened during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Based on records from DOH-Central Visayas, the number of victims from firecracker-related injuries increased in 2019 compared to the previous year.
In the last Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, a total of 64 people suffered firecracker injuries in the region based on the January 4, 2019 data. This number is higher than the 54 injured in the previous celebrations in 2018.
The Province of Cebu had the highest number of incidents in Central Visayas in 2019 with 53 cases. Four cases involved amputation, 39 had injuries, seven had eye wounds and three were hit by stray bullets during an indiscriminate firing of guns.
This compared to the January 2018 data where only 43 cases of injuries were reported in Cebu. One case involved amputation, 34 had injuries, seven had eye wounds and one was hit by a stray bullet.
“Let's celebrate the yuletide holidays safer and healthier along with our families. Let us greet the new year right with our healthier lives anew as well. Tis the season to reflect on the year that was and out of those reflections, we come out as better persons come 2020,” Blanco said. (HBL/JGS)
