THE Commission on Higher Education (Ched) 7 honored the University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu City with six awards during the celebration of the First National Higher Education Day on May 22, 2021.

Ched cited USC for exemplary leadership, institutional performance in the Quacquarelli Symonds Asia University Rankings and program excellence for both its Centers of Excellence and Centers of Development.

As it marked its 27th founding anniversary, Ched also recognized USC for institutional excellence as an autonomous higher educational institution (HEI) and as a partner for Quality Assurance in Higher Education.

Fr. Jesuraj Anthoniappen, SVD, vice president for academic affairs, received the awards for USC from Ched Chairman Dr. Prospero de Vera III and Ched 7 Director Dr. Maximo C. Aljibe during the blended (face-to-face and virtual) awarding ceremony at the Cebu Normal University.

As the Cebu Normal University’s activity center limited the attendance to 50 persons, some heads of HEIs attended the ceremony in person while the rest and those elsewhere in the region attended via video conferencing.

In his message, Anthoniappen recognized the “constant support” of Ched and other national agencies that “saw our potential to rise above” and “generously extended helping hands,” and for providing scholarships and research grants.

He said the guidance, directive and support of Ched during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic that saw educational institutions grappling how to adapt with the changing educational landscape “enabled us to see a ray of hope during the dark days.”

“(USC has not) compromised its quality eeducation, even in these turbulent times,” Anthoniappen said, adding that “we will never compromise if similar disruptions happen in the future.”

University president Fr. Narciso Cellan Jr., SVD, D. Comm., who took office in the middle of the pandemic, shared the honor with the faculty, students and staff, as well as USC’s mission partners.
