CHED names 3 universities as centers of excellence and development

MANILA, Philippines --- The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has designated three universities as centers of excellence and development for their best practices, innovative curriculum, research and extension, and professional development in Journalism.

CHED Chairperson Dr. Patricia Licuanan, through CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 4 series of 2013 dated March 22, 2013, has announced that the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman was named a "Center of Excellence" (COE) in Broadcasting.

In the same CMO, two other universities, namely the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and the University of Santo Tomas (UST), were also named "Centers of Development" (COD) in Journalism.

The designation came upon the recommendation of the Technical Committee for Broadcasting and Technical Committee for Journalism, respectively.

According to Licuanan, the three universities-as centers of excellence and of development- will serve as "catalysts for world class scholarships, best practices, innovative curriculum, research and extension, and professional development" in Journalism and Broadcasting.

Licuanan said in qualifying for the distinction, the thee universities has "earned peer and industry recognition with strong local, national and international linkages; showed innovations in their programs; delivered academic and research output, and engaged in active alumni programs.

"The identified COEs and CODs, Licuanan explained, will be entitled to the priority in the selection of the CHED institutional partners with regards to its developmental projects.
