CHRIS Newsome scored on a short jumper from the baseline just before time expired to give the Meralco Bolts a hard-earned 95-93 win over the TerraFirma Dyip, in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup on Sunday, November 8, at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena and Cultural Center in Pampanga.
The Bolts led by as much as 20 but saw their lead evaporate in the face of a massive rally by the Dyip. A three-pointer from the corner by Juami Tiongson tied the game at 93-all with 56 ticks left. TerraFirma even had a shot at tying the game but Tiongson missed a jumper with seven seconds remaining.
That proved to be more than enough time for Newsome as he drove right, rose up near the baseline and shot the ball in over the outstretched arms of TerraFirma’s CJ Perez right before time expired to give the Bolts the thrilling win.
The Bolts’ win boosted their win-loss record to 6-4, putting them in contention for a top four finish that would give them a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinal round.
Six different players scored in double-figures led by big man Raymond Almazan who finished with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Bong Quinto added 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Newsome chipped in 12. Allein Maliksi and Aaron Black contributed 10 points each while Bryan Faundo had 10 points.
TerraFirma fell to 1-8. Perez and Tiongson carried the fight for the Dyip with 21 points each. (JNP)
