City collects 1,000 tons of garbage

AROUND 1,000 tons of garbage has been collected by Cebu City Government from different cemeteries in the city since All Saints’ Day on Tuesday, November 1, 2022.

Grace Luardo, head of the Cebu Environmental Sanitation and Enforcement Team (Ceset), told SunStar Cebu Wednesday, November 2, that this does not include the waste they have collected during their clearing operations in the cemeteries before the "Kalagkalag" that totaled to around 2,736 tons of garbage.

Luardo said that of the 1,063 tons collected from November 1 to the afternoon of November 2, most of the garbage is biodegradable wastes like dried flowers and leaves left by the public during their visit to the cemeteries.

Around 120 individuals were also issued citation tickets for littering, smoking, spitting, and urinating in improper areas inside the cemeteries, she added.

Those who were apprehended will be required to pay a fine of not less than P1,000 but not more than P5,000 and would need to undergo community service, said Luardo. (IRT)
