City to donate 22 buses to mountain villages

SCHOOL children in the mountain barangays may soon enjoy the services of school buses once the Cebu City Government finalizes the donation of 22 brand-new buses.

The 22 brand-new Hyundai buses were turned over to the Cebu City Government on Monday, March 2, 2020.

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella said the buses are primarily for the mountain barangays, which can use them as school buses.

“That can be used by the barangays as a school bus and for all other purposes of the barangays,” said Labella.

Labella said some pupils, especially those enrolled in public schools in the mountain barangays, do not have enough transportation and they still have to walk several kilometers to get to school.

Once the bus is donated, the barangay will take care of the bus maintenance, gasoline and other expenses.

Labella advised all the recipients to properly maintain the vehicles.

“We have learned a lesson that those vehicles that were used by the barangays and even used by the City Government before, were not so properly maintained,” Labella said.

During the time of former mayor Tomas Osmeña, the City allocated P152 million from the 2019 Annual Budget to purchase 19 buses for the purpose of transporting school children in mountain barangays.

However, Labella said the buses from RDK, which won the bidding, were too huge for the mountain barangays’ narrow roads. That is why he ordered the small buses for the mountain barangays. (USJ-R Journ Intern Mae Fhel Gom-os)
