City Hall: Help for victims underway

THE Cebu City Government has assured that help will be given to close to 80 families affected by a fire that hit Sitio Bugnay, Barangay Santa Cruz, Cebu City on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021.

The fire was the second to occur in Barangay Santa Cruz within the week.

Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS) officer-in-charge Portia Basmayor said fire victims who were house owners will receive P20,000, while sharer or renters will receive P10,000.

Basmayor said food packs are also being distributed to the fire victims who are currently staying at the gym in the barangay.

She said food packs will be distributed for five days.

For his part, Santa Cruz Barangay Captain Jerome Lim said the barangay will provide house materials like plywood and galvanized iron for the victims.

Lim said the Barangay Council is set to pass a resolution regarding the matter.

He said the Council was still in a dilemma whether or not to use all of the Barangay’s remaining disaster funds which is supposed to last until December to help the fire victims.

Only P600,000 is left of their disaster fund.

According to data from the DSWS, as of 4 p.m. on Sept. 3, 79 families or 263 individuals were listed as victims of the fire that burned down 26 houses.

There were no reported casualties.
