Civil works on Cebu BRT project to start in October

THE long-overdue Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Cebu City will finally see the light of day.

Cebu City Councilor James Anthony Cuenco told reporters that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is set to start civil works on the Cebu BRT Project's Package 1 in October.

Cuenco, who chairs the committee on transportation in the City Council, said DOTr has already chosen a winning bidder to implement the first phase of the BRT project. Cuenco, however, has yet to know who won the bid.

Package 1 of the Cebu BRT project includes the construction of terminals and other infrastructures from the Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT) along N. Bacalso Avenue, traversing the Osmena Blvd. up to the Cebu Provincial Capitol.

Cuenco said that with orders of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to DOTr to immediately initiate work on the Cebu BRT project, he also hopes that the implementing agency will also include the construction of Packages 2 and 3 together with Package 1.

"With the President's go signal, we are hoping that they would simultaneously construct Packages 2 and 3. This is because Package 1's route is too short. I don't think commuters would want to ride from the South Bus (terminal) and disembark at the Capitol just to ride another vehicle," Cuenco said, in a mix of English and Cebuano.

"We are hoping that the construction works will be done simultaneously. Even if it will take some time, as long as we can see that they are being worked on," he added.

Package 2 and 3 involve the establishment of trunk services from the South Road Properties (SRP) to CSBT via the Natalio Bacalso Avenue, and from Capitol to IT Park with terminals at SRP and IT Park. (JKV)
