A Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego was called out to rescue two men stranded on a disabled sailing yacht about 30 miles west of Oceanside, California, after an intense storm pounded the south of the state on December 6.
The United States Coast Guard said the crew rescued a 25-year-old-man suffering from dehydration, as well as an 80-year-old man with head injuries and complications from diabetes. They were reportedly airlifted to safety while a Coast Guard cutter towed the vessel to Avalon Harbor. The winter storm also caused disruption onshore after torrential rain triggered flooding and mudslides in areas of the state ravaged by wildfires earlier this year.
