A BATTLE royale is expected on Saturday afternoon as the league-leading Southwestern University-Phinma Cobras take on the University of Cebu Webmasters for the top spot in the standings in the 2019 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum on Nov. 9, 2019.
Tip-off is set at 4:30 p.m. with SWU-Phinma and UC set to go all out for the top seed in the upcoming semifinal round. The Cobras are currently leading the way with their 9-2 win-loss card, while the Webmasters are a game behind at 8-3. Both teams have been scorching hot in the second round of the elims, going undefeated in five games.
UC needs to defeat SWU-Phinma by eight points in order to take the top seed. The Cobras emerged victorious over the Webmasters, 65-58, in their first round encounter.
SWU-Phinma head coach Mike Reyes is aware of the importance of getting the top seed.
“We both want to win to get the number one spot,” said the veteran head coach.
At the same time, Reyes admitted that getting the top seed does not mean that the semifinals would be a cakewalk for the Cobras.
“I’m worried because USC outplayed us in the first and second rounds and we just found a way to pull off the win,” said Reyes of the University of San Carlos Warriors, who is already locked in as the fourth seed.
The three-time defending champion University of the Visayas Green Lancers, meanwhile, is set to be the third seed in the semifinals.
Both the Cobras and the Webmasters will have a twice-to-beat advantage over their opponents in the Final Four.
In the high school division, the SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles will be trying to forge a three-way tie for first place in the standings when they battle the reigning champions, UC Baby Webmasters.
UC is currently holding the top spot with an 8-1 card while Ateneo de Cebu carries a 7-2 record. UV and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation finished the elims with 8-2 and 7-3 records, respectively. (JNP)
