Iloilo City, Iloilo (PNA) - The Commission on Elections (Comelec), imposed gun ban nationwide ended yesterday, June 12, with a total number violators arrested in Western Visayas reaching some 311 since its implementation was started five months ago.

The gun ban started last January 13 with intensified monitoring and establishment of checkpoints set up by the poll body and manned by the Philippine National Police (PNP) around the country, including Region, that is, Western Visayas, to preempt the proliferation of unlicensed firearms.

Of the 311 gun ban violators apprehended in Western Visayas, 301 were civilians and five members of the Philippine National Police, two are members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and three government officials who were apprehended for their unlicensed firearms.

Slapped with cases were 244 violators, 47 are under investigation, five with dismissed cases, 28 under bail and 36 acquitted after an investigation.

Firearms confiscated were 296 of which 167 were high powered and 129 low powered.

Confiscated were 138 bladed weapons, 19 explosives and four which were gun replicas or airsoft shooting 6 mm round pellets which travel at speeds much lower than real bullets. While painful when hit by these pellets, they cannot kill nor cause heavy-bleeding injuries unlike real guns.

Police Regional Director Agrimero Cruz Jr. said that despite the end of the gun ban implementation, the police will continue to be on alert to monitor and prevent the proliferation of illegal firearms.
