Comelec reminds public to register for barangay, SK polls

THE Commission on Elections-Central Visayas (Comelec 7) reminded the public, particularly the unregistered Filipinos 15 years old and above, to visit the nearest Comelec office or satellite offices before the voter’s registration ends this month.

Comelec 7 Acting Director Lionel Marco Castillano said the agency is still accepting applications for new voters' registration, transfer of polling precinct to another precinct, correction of entries, and reactivation of voter’s registration.

The voter’s registration will end on January 31, 2023.

Castillano said the voter’s registration is part of the agency’s preparations for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, which will be held on October 30, 2023.

He urged the public to register early to avoid overcrowding especially on the last day of registration.

“Please visit the Comelec FB pages sa inyong lugar para makahibalo mo kung asa karon panahona ang Comelec nga nag-rehistro kay naa man ta’y mga offsite ug mall registration,” Castillano told SunStar Cebu on Monday, January 23, 2023.

Applicants can also download for free the registration forms from the links provided by the Comelec Facebook pages, while there are available forms at their offices and off-site registration venue.

Castillano said applicants must bring one valid government-issued ID or company ID.

The Comelec also accepts a Student ID for students or 15 years old and above who are registering for the SK polls.

As of January 23, the Comelec 7 has processed 104,936 applications, 68,737 of which are from Cebu Province, including the highly urbanized cities (HUCs).

There were also 17,498 applications from Negros Oriental, 17,233 applications from Bohol, and 1,468 from Siquijor.

Castillano said these applications are composed of new voter’s registration, transfer of polling precinct to another precinct, correction of entries, and reactivation of voter’s registration that are being processed for approval.

With this, he said the exact numbers of new registered voters in the region will be determined after the registration ends next week.

“Ang atu kay application file pa sa pagkakaron, so dili pa namo ma determine until after sa registration kay kini siya aprubahan pa sa atung Election Registration Board,” Castillano said.

(We cannot determine yet the exact number of registrations as we are still the application process stage and the Election Registration Board has to approve the applications first.)

The official added that based on the previous national election, Cebu, including the independent cities of Cebu and Lapu-Lapu, had over 3.3 million registered voters.

Castillano said the number of new voters’ registration keeps on increasing, as the agency focused its effort on the registration of senior high students for SK elections from the past two weeks.

“Kay kung maghuwat ta sa opisina, medyo mingaw-mingaw na gyud. So sige ta og offsite registration gani ang atung mall registration last week para sa Cebu City ug Mandaue, medyo dili man ing-ana ka daghan pa, basin karong semanaha modaghan pa,” he said.

In Lapu-Lapu City, Comelec has also extended its services to residents of Olango Island to increase voter registration.

“From the past two weeks, subsob ang atung gihimo nga off-site registration sa mga schools, barangay, island barangay, sa Cebu City starting the first week of January kay naa nata sa mga malls, para sa Cebu City North ug South district kay naa nata sa Robinsons Galleria, sa Mandaue kay naa na sa Pacific Mall,” Castillano said.
