Congressional stimulus 'failed to address governmental need' - Cuomo

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday unanimously passed a $2 trillion bill aimed at helping unemployed workers and industries hurt by the coronavirus epidemic, as well as providing billions of dollars to buy urgently-needed medical equipment.

New York state leads the country in both deaths and infections. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has been sounding the alarm about an expected shortage of hospital beds and ventilators, said on Thursday the state's death toll stood at 385, up from 285 a day earlier.

After bitter negotiations, the deeply divided Senate came together and passed the bill by a 96-0 vote, which sent the massive stimulus package to the House of Representatives for a vote on Friday.
