Consolacion LGU launches hydrophonic farming

THE local government unit (LGU) of Consolacion in northern Cebu launched its hydrophonic farms on Friday, July 29, 2022.

Municipal agriculturist Nelia Valle told SunStar Cebu on Saturday, July 30, that the project that aims to boost agriculture and revolutionize food production in the town was conceptualized in 2021.

The farm sites are situated in barangays Polog and Nangka.

Hydroponic farming is a system of growing crops without soil. The plant roots grow in a liquid nutrient solution or inside the moist inert materials like Rockwool and Vermiculite.

In coordination with the local farming associations in Consolacion, Valle said the project was made possible by the Department of Agriculture (DA) Central Visayas.

Each farm site has seven varieties of leafy vegetables that suited for its soil, such as lettuce, Xanadu, Semental, Locarno, Grand rapid, Black rose, Invicta and green span.

During the launching, Consolacion Mayor Teresa "Nene" Alegado spearheaded the harvest of vegetables, which were sold to the public at P30 per kilo.

The farms are open to customers Mondays to Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (HIC)
