Consolacion, Mandaue officials to discuss plans to clean up Jagobiao Creek

OFFICIALS of Consolacion’s disaster reduction office are set to meet with their counterparts in Mandaue City to draft a unified initiative to maintain the cleanliness of Jagobiao Creek.

Engineer Danilo Capangpangan, head of the Consolacion Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), told SunStar Cebu on Monday, Aug. 1, 2022, that the discussion’s primary aim is for them to construct unified plans to ensure that the cleanliness of the Jagobiao Creek is maintained.

The joint meeting between the two local government units (LGUs) aims to address the improper disposal of garbage at the creek despite their regular clean-up activities.

The Jagobiao Creek covers a portion between the boundary of Consolacion and Mandaue, but Capangpangan said Consolacion and Mandaue had individual cleaning initiatives for the creek at the time.

For Consolacion, Capangpangan said they do clean-up drives in Jagobiao Creek daily along the town’s other waterways and yield not more than two trucks of garbage.

But the activity temporarily stopped after Typhoon Odette (Rai) hit Cebu in December of last year.

The usual garbage collected then were plastic bottles and plastic bags, Capangpangan added.

On Saturday, July 30, as the LDRRMO resumed their clean-up activity, they collected almost a ton of garbage from the creek.

The trash particularly clogged up the creek’s box culvert, and another contributor to the clogging is the collapse of its riprap, which may have been due to the typhoon, said Capangpangan.

But what concerned the LDRRMO the most was that the garbage nearly covered Jagobiao Creek’s delta.

A river delta is where a river mouth enters another body of water, such as an ocean or lake.

With this, Capangpangan urged barangay and purok leaders, especially those living near waterways, to implement strict waste segregation and teach their constituents to observe proper disposal of household waste.
