Container vans containing hospital wastes catch fire in Inayawan

AT LEAST four of several container vans piled up inside a warehouse along Rosita West White Road, Barangay Inayawan, Cebu City caught fire on Wednesday evening, November 9, 2022.

The fire started at 6:54 p.m. and was raised to first alarm at 7:09 p.m. and put under control at 7:21 p.m.

Firemen placed the fire damage at P12,150.

Responding firemen from the Cebu City Fire Station and the Barangay Fire Brigade discovered that the container vans placed inside a warehouse of Pollution Abatement Systems Specialist Inc. allegedly owned by a certain Julito Pogoy contained medical wastes from the different hospitals in Cebu City.

The discovery was also confirmed by warehouse supervisor Mac Indy Bellin.

Bellin said in an interview with SunStar Cebu that they tried to extinguish the fire but failed, prompting them to call the fire station for assistance.

When asked if the fire was caused by a lighted cigarette butt thrown into the container vans, Bellin said he could not pinpoint somebody responsible for the fire as the incident occurred outside their working hours and the employees had already went home.

Besides, he said they kept on reminding the employees not to smoke near the container vans.

At least two firemen were injured in the fire, namely, Roel Villagracia, 43, and Fire Officer 1 Brainard Gutang.

Villagracia reportedly stepped on a needle, while Gutang, who was riding a motorcycle, hit the rear portion of a fire truck ahead of him when its driver suddenly applied a brake.

Gutang was injured in his chin.

They were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Fire Officer 3 Emerson Arceo said they are still determining what really caused the fire, including a lighted cigarette butt that might have been thrown in the area. (BBT, TPT)
