Cop who arrested own robber to get award from CCPO

THE policeman who foiled a robbery attempt and turned the tables on the robber will receive an award from the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).

Lieutenant Colonel Wilbert Parilla, deputy director for administration of the CCPO, said they commend Patrolman Sefred Paul Yorpo for using what he learned from his studies of criminology during the encounter.

Parilla said he already ordered Major Nolan Tagsip, chief of the Abellana Police Station, to recommend awarding Yorpo, who is assigned at the Investigation and Detective Management Unit of the Mandaue City Police Office but is a resident of Cebu City.

Parilla said it is important for a policeman not to panic when dealing with a robbery situation.

Yorpo was riding his bicycle when he was blocked by 48-year-old Rogelio Arabis Lipar, who was on a scooter, at the corner of Don Mariano Cui and Jasmin Streets in Cebu City on Saturday morning, September 10, 2022.

Lipar pointed his gun at Yorpe and announced a holdup. When he tried to grab the policeman’s cellphone, which the latter had placed in the back pocket of his cycling shorts, Yorpe grabbed Lipar’s arm and wrestled him to the ground until he was able to take the gun away.

“For this, we have to recommend Yorpe. We are asking the chief of police of Station 2 (Abellana Police Station) to request or recommend for appropriate awards,” Parilla said in a mix of Cebuano and English.

According to the background investigation conducted by the Abellana Police Station, Lipar is a noted robber, who has victimized many people in the city.

Lipar was charged with robbery on Monday, September 12, 2022. (AYB/PJB)
