ONE of the four active police officers involved in the robbery and killing of Barangay Balungag, San Fernando councilor Maria Louela Baringui-an and her husband Peter was finally arrested close to seven months since the crime was committed.

Msgt. Alvin Enad was arrested by personnel of the Regional Intelligence Division in Central Visayas and the Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group Visayas Field Unit on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2022, at the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 headquarters in Camp Sergio Osmeña Jr. in Cebu City where he was placed on camp restriction since February of this year.

Brig. Gen. Roque Eduardo Vega, PRO 7 director, said in a press statement that Enad was arrested based on a warrant issued by Carcar City Regional Trial Court Branch 77 Judge Bracero Redoble.

Robbery with double homicide charges await Enad, Vega added.

Enad’s involvement in the Baringui-an couple’s murder was made known after his cohorts, namely SSgts. Rene Catamora, Junrey Ypil, Junrey Batobalonos and former police officer Esmeraldo Quillosa implicated him in their extrajudicial confessions.

They identified Enad as the one who planned the operation against the Baringui-ans.

Unlike Enad, Catamora, Ypil, Batobalonos and Quillosa are currently detained at the Cebu City Jail.

Following Enad’s arrest, Vega said they can finally consider the Baringui-an murder case as closed.

Not yet resolved

For Samantha Baringui-an, the murdered couple’s youngest daughter, Enad’s arrest provided a sort of relief for her and her siblings.

Samantha told SunStar Cebu on Saturday, Aug. 13, that Enad’s arrest was a sign that they were slowly securing justice for their murdered parents.

But Samantha said that unlike Vega, she can’t consider the case as truly solved.

“Para namo, sir, nga isip anak sa akong mama ug papa, case solved para namo if the killers are put in jail and begin serving the penalty (For us, we will consider the case as solved if the killers are put in jail and begin serving their sentences),” Samantha said.

She added that with Enad and the other suspects now on trial, they can finally determine if another person had ordered the murder.

Maria Louella and her husband Peter were gunned down in their house on the night of Feb. 13, 2022.

Their children and bodyguards were unharmed.

Aside from killing the couple, their assailants also carted away the couple’s valuables. (BBT / TPT / JKV)
