Cop shot in head while breaking up dance fight

A POLICEMAN is in critical condition after he was shot while trying to break up a fight in Purok Tambis, Barangay Lawis in the northern town of San Remigio, Cebu, in the early hours of Sunday, December 4, 2022.

Staff Sergeant Jade Carabuena, a 38-year-old resident of the area, was shot in the back of the head.

Police still don’t know who was responsible, but they are looking at five persons of interest (POIs).

Major Wendell Abellana, chief of the San Remigio Police Station, said Carabuena called their hotline around 2 a.m. to report a disturbance and to ask for backup.

Abellana said Carabuena’s neighbors had sought his assistance after a fight broke out at the neighborhood dance, which was being held across the latter’s house.

Abellana said Carabuena was still on the line when he placed himself between the people who were fighting.

“Our personnel was surprised when he stopped talking. The next thing they heard were people screaming that someone had been shot,” he said in Cebuano.

Because of this they immediately sent operatives to the area, he said.

When the police, they found a bloodied Carabuena lying on the ground 10 to 15 meters from his house.

Abellana said they will subject the five POIs to a paraffin test to identify who pulled the trigger.

“We also want the witness to be sure which one of them shot the police officer because the area was very dark,” he said in Cebuano.

Carabuena is confined in a private hospital in Cebu City.

According to the latest information received by Abellana, the bullet is still lodged in the policeman’s head. (GPL)
