Cop shot while pacifying a fight in San Remigio dies

A POLICEMAN who was shot while trying to break up a fight in Purok Tambis, Barangay Lawis, San Remigio town, northern Cebu, has expired in a private hospital in Cebu City on Wednesday at 1:22 p.m.. December 7, after several days of fighting for his life.

Staff Sergeant Jade Carabuena, a 38-year-old resident of the area, was responding to a trouble between his neighbors that erupted at a disco party just across his house on Sunday dawn, December 4, 2022, when he was shot in the head. The bullet also damaged his brain.

He was brought to a hospital in Bogo City but was later transferred to a private hospital in Cebu City due to his critical condition.

Cebu Police Provincial Office (CCPO) Chief Colonel Romel Ochave said Carabuena died of traumatic brain injury.

Ochave said the San Remigio police already filed a case of frustrated murder on Wednesday against suspects Filmar Jomao-as Menchavez and his brother Jonathan and a certain John Doe, who is still at large, but since the victim died, the case will be elevated to murder.

“Actually nag file na ang ating San Remigio Municipal Police Station kahapon ng umaga ng kaso sa piskalya frustrated murder, ipapa-amend natin sa murder kase namatay yung ating police declared kahapon 1:22 pm,” Ochave said on Thursday, December 8.

(Actually, our San Remigio Municipal Police Station has already filed a frustrated murder case yesterday morning at the fiscal’s office, we will ask them to amend it to murder case because our police was declared dead yesterday at 1:22 p.m.)

The Menchavez siblings was arrested by responding policemen after the incident for alarm and scandal case, while the third suspect eluded arrest.

But the police upgraded the alarm and scandal charge to frustrated murder case after some witnesses pointed to the two as the ones who aimed a gun at the back of the victim.

They then elevated the case to murder when Carabuena died.

The CPPO will turn over P50,000 financial assistance to the family of the victim, aside from the benefits that Carabuena will receive from the PNP (Philippine National Police) organization.

“May ibibigay muna tayong P50,000 duon sa family niya tapos mayroon tayong survivor officer na ide-designate para i-arrange yung benefit nya,” Ochave added.

(We will give P50,000 to his family, then we have a survivor officer that we are going to designate to arrange his benefits).

Carabuena heaped praises from high-ranking police officials for responding to an alarm even if he was not on duty.

Police Regional Office 7 Director Brigadier General Roderick Augustus Alba condemned the killing, saying policemen in the entire Central Visayas are in grief for Carabuena’s sudden departure.

Alba admired Carabuena for sacrificing his life for the sake of peace and order in his community.

Because of this, the general issued an order to all his personnel not to be complacent when responding to an alarm.

“We salute, grabe ang saludo namin kay Sergeant Carabuena for offering his life his job as a police officer, our directive is more vigilant yung ating kasamahan sa PNP on and off the office, we have to be 10 steps ahead pagka mag responde tayo wag basta padalos-dalos and we should always presume and assume na there is always a threat to our lives when responding to calls for assistance,” Alba said.

Alba added he does not want another responding policeman to get killed. (AYB, TPT)
