Philippines Chief Justice Renato Corona (in wheelhair) is escorted by security personnel as he leaves the Senate after testifying at his impeachment trial in Manila. The Philippines' top judge denied he was a crook as he testified then dramatically walked out at his own trial Tuesday, denouncing his impeachment as a personal vendetta by President Benigno Aquino
(UPDATE) After a 'hypoglycemic episode' during the impeachment trial, Chief Justice Renato Corona has been advised to skip Wednesday's trial and stay in the hospital's intensive care unit for 48 hours for further medical observation due to possible heart attack.
Dr. Eugenio Jose Ramos, senior vice president of Medical City in Pasig, told reporters that Corona is considered a "very high-risk patient" and doctors are treating him for "possible acute coronary syndrome or heart attack."
Corona, a diabetic, was brought to the hospital Tuesday evening for "shortness of breath, cold sweats and light-headedness" after suffering from hypoglycemia, according to the medical bulletin.
Meanwhile, Senate doctor Mariano Blancia arrived at the Medical City to confirm Corona's condition as ordered by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile.
Senator-judges are reportedly going to hold a caucus at noon to decide whether the court will wait for Corona following his health condition.
Yesterday, Enrile said that if the chief justice will not be able to return on Wednesday for cross examination, his testimonies will be stricken off the record and the case will be considered submitted for resolution.
Earlier, Supreme Court spokesperson Midas Marquez said in a radio interview that a blood test on Corona showed he had elevated Troponin T levels and the diagnosis is a possible heart attack.
Marquez said he is not sure if the chief justice will be able to take the witness stand on Wednesday as ordered by the impeachment court.
He assured that Corona wanted to continue with his testimonies but his doctors were against it.
"Bago ako umalis, sinigurado ko kung ano ba talaga ang kaniyang nararamdaman at kung tingin niya at makakapunta siya sa impeachment kanina. Talagang gusto na niyang matapos ito," he said.
"Medyo tumututol na yung mga duktor na kausap namin. Sinasabi ko nga na baka puwedeng payagan niyo at humarap ng sandali at ipaliwanag iyung kaniyang kundisyon," he added.
Meanwhile, Senators will check whether Corona is fit to testify on Wednesday.
"The Senate will verify his (Corona's) condition," says Senator Tito Sotto.
Senator Francis Escudero meanwhile added: "We will have to check on his medical condition. If indeed he is too ill to continue, we might not be able to continue with his direct testimony and cross examination."
