Cotabato floods kill grandma, 2 others missing

KIDAPAWAN CITY – Torrential rain brought about by Tropical Storm Ofel on Thursday lashed low-lying villages in Tulunan town in North Cotabato, killing a 70-year old woman and sweeping away two others still reported missing, reports from the police said.

Sr. Insp. Ronnie Cordero, chief of Tulunan police, identified the fatality as Delia Katel, 70, of Sitio Sambulawan, Barangay Bacung in Tulunan.

Katel was washed away by raging waters in Tulunan River when she tried to flee from her house, according to Cordero.

At least 30 houses in Barangay Bacung, mostly made of light materials, were damaged by gushing waters from the swollen river following torrential rains.

Rescue teams were sent to the area to locate two residents identified as John Rey Barrientos and Bonifacio Karan who went missing after they were also swept by raging flood waters at around 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Social welfare employees in Tulunan town were also dispatched to the area to distribute relief items to flood victims, according to Cordero.

Flood waters, which rose waist deep, also swept rice and corn fields and houses in nearby villages in Tulunan, reports said.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council in Tulunan has yet to furnish media reports of the damage caused by flash floods.

Tropical storm Ofel hit areas in Mindanao, including North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat, reports said. –KG, GMA News
