Councilor: Only ‘inclement weather’ can change new venue of Sinulog Grand Parade

THE 2023 Sinulog Grand Parade will take place at the South Road Properties (SRP) on Sunday, January 15.

This was reiterated by Cebu City Councilor Phillip Zafra, committee on peace and order chairman, on Wednesday, January 4.

Zafra said Sinulog Foundation president Ricky Dakay has assured him that the construction of the stage that will be used for the ritual showdown will be completed at the end of this week.

However, Zafra said that if it continues to rain or if there is a typhoon and the area around the stage and the parade path become impassable because of mud then they will execute “Plan B,” which is to revert to the original route that will traverse Osmeña Boulevard on the way to the Cebu City Sports Center.

“It can be. Worst-case scenario kung dili gyud madala kay bagyo or what kung dili gyud makaya didto (if the grand parade can’t be held at the SRP because of inclement weather), the mayor always said we should have back-up plans,” he said.

The city councilor admitted that they are facing a challenge in preparing the new venue, especially with the bad weather, but he assured that all will be ready in time for Cebu’s biggest and grandest festival.

He said they and Dakay Construction, the contractor, had made sure that there wouldn’t be any delay in the construction, adding that the bleachers along the parade route will be set up in no time.

When the City Government announced that this year’s Sinulog Grand Parade would be held at the SRP, some sectors were worried that the venue would be too hot as there are hardly any cover from the elements.

However, Zafra said the bleachers, which can accommodate 6,000 to 9,000 spectators, will have a roof.

He said they will inspect the area later this week to get an update on the status of the preparations. (AYB, PJB)
