Councilor to police: Identify Labangon ‘hit and run’ driver

COUNCILOR Rey Gealon, chairman of the Cebu City Council committee on laws, urged the Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) of the Cebu City Police Office to identify the driver who hit two students in a pedestrian lane in Barangay Labangon on November 7, 2022.

The students were crossing the pedestrian lane when they were hit by a motorcycle driven by the still unidentified driver.

Gealon sent a letter to Police Lieutenant Colonel Keith Andaya of the TEU to identify the driver and impose a penalty.

"They fell down upon impact in the middle of that street on a marked pedestrian lane but the motorcycle driver, who was seemingly overspeeding, just hurriedly sped off without stopping by to assist his victims and surrender himself to the authorities," Gealon said in the letter.

"If this reckless driver will go unpunished for his criminal act, this will set a bad precedent. Parents will have no peace of mind as they await their children from school to home. Children, or any pedestrian for that matter, will never feel safe in our streets," he added.

Gealon said the driver may face two counts of reckless imprudence resulting in physical injuries, as the incident appeared to be a “hit and run.”

The incident happened around 6 a.m. of November 7, 2022 in Barangay Labangon, Cebu City. Here’s a CCTV footage that captured the incident:

The CCTV footage, posted on SunStar Cebu’s Facebook page, has so far garnered 3,100 reactions, 1,300 comments and 1,300 shares after it was posted on November 10.

Based on the comments, none from the netizens have defended the driver, who was shown in the video leaving the scene immediately after hitting the two students.

"Mao na, bisan og pedestrian di gyud mohunong. Unya pangkuhaan na sila og lisensya uy. Okay ra gyud (magpabulhot) basta dili pedestrian. Naa pay uban masuko mura raba gyud og kabayad. Tawon ang mga students kaluoy," said Elli Zarg.

"Kani nga driver maoy way seminar ug way disiplina, kahibalo nga pedestrian, niharurot hinuon og padagan. Nihunong man gani ang uban, siya mura og tag-iya og dalan," said another netizen, Jessellemarie Garbo Tiongzon.

Based on the video, the two students were able to stand up after the incident. (PAC/LMY)
