THE recent surge of Covid-19 cases in the country has threatened the Philippines’ hosting of the upcoming 2023 Fiba World Cup Asian qualifying games, which are to be held in a bubble setup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

According to a report on Spin.ph, special assistant to the SBP president Al Panlilio, Ryan Gregorio, said that the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is taking a day-by-day look at the situation, which has seen Metro Manila and its nearby areas being placed in Alert Level 3 until Jan. 15.

“We are still monitoring the situation. We are adhering to the government’s guidance. Hopefully, the Covid-19 situation will stabilize as soon as possible,” Gregorio said.

The Gilas Pilipinas national men’s basketball team is set to have a busy start to the new year as they compete in the first round of the qualifying games against the likes of longtime rivals Korea, India and New Zealand, beginning on Feb. 24.

The Philippines was scheduled to host this tournament back in November at the Angeles University Foundation in Clark, Pampanga before it was rescheduled to February at the Big Dome.
