MANILA, Philippines – The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) on Friday (December 7) has declared a unilateral ceasefire in line with the yuletide season.
The first round of the ceasefire will take effect on 12:01 a.m. of December 24, 2018 to 11:59 p.m. of December 26, 2018 and the second round will be from 12:01 a.m. of December 31, 2018 to 11:59 p.m. of January 1, 2019.
In a statement, the CPP assured that: ‘During the days covered by this temporary ceasefire declaration, all units of the NPA and people’s militias shall cease and desist from carrying out offensive military campaigns and operations against uniformed armed personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP) of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP).’
The government, on the other hand, maintained that it will not reciprocate the communist group’s ceasefire declaration.
“Wala, because I objected to it (ceasefire). I don’t want the NPA to be using this to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Bahala sila. That’s their call but hindi kami. Kung gusto nila para makababa daw (ang) fighters nila. They can come down, for all we care, hindi naman namin sila ano…(basta) kung wala silang baril,” maintained Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana. – Marje Pelayo (with reports from Rosalie Coz)
