THE Creamline Cool Smashers kept their composure down the stretch to outlast the Petro Gazz Angeles, 24-26, 28-26, 25-22, 25-20, in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the PCV Socio-Civic Cultural Center in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte.
New recruit Tots Carlos delivered several crucial hits as she responded to Jia Morado’s feeds when top hitter Alyssa Valdez struggled at times in trying to penetrate the Angels’ tough net defense and open hitter Jema Galanza got bothered by a hurting knee.
Morado was declared as the game’s best player as she finished with 35 excellent sets while adding three points even as Valdez still ended up with a triple-double of 16 points, 21 digs and 18 receptions. Jeanette Panaga also played well against her former team, finishing with 15 hits.
Ces Molina paced Petro Gazz with 18 points while Remy Palma and Ria Meneses supported her with 17 and 16 points, respectively. However, the Angels did not get the usual firepower from Myla Pablo and Cebuana spiker Gretchel Soltones, who ended up with just six hits apiece.
Creamline, which hurdled Sta. Lucia in four sets in Saturday’s opening games, rallied in the early part of the pivotal third and nabbed the lead at 18-17 as Carlos powered in a hit into the heart of Petro Gazz defense. That also sparked the Cool Smashers’ 7-5 rally with Carlos chipping another blast and coming through with a set clinching hit which Mean Mendrez failed to save at the baseline.
Petro Gazz, which also pulled off a four-set win over Black Mamba Army last Monday, slipped to 1-1. (JNP)
