DA boosts seaweed farming in Davao del Sur

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has provided assistance to boost seaweed farming in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur. Through DA's Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP), the Bato Seaweeds Association Inc. (Baseas) received P6.2 million aid which will fund seaweed farming and processing project. Sta. Cruz town is known for being a major producer of seaweeds in the region. The commodity is also a source of livelihood to at least 372 fishermen. Part of the P6.2 million aid came the provincial government and Baseas. Baseas president Victor Relator said their association has established a five-hectare seaweed production farm and put up a processing warehouse and drying facility through the assistance. "The processing warehouse includes a drier where members can dry their seaweeds not only from the Baseas' five-hectare farm but also from their own individual farms," Relator said. Members were also given 67 non-motorized bancas which they use in planting and harvesting seaweeds. (Cherry Palicte)
