Daanbantayan budget officer drowns, 6-year-old granddaughter survives

THE 57-year-old budget officer of the Municipality of Daanbantayan in northern Cebu drowned after she fell into a manhole in a beach resort in Sitio Tambo, Barangay Kawit, Medellin in northern Cebu past 12 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2022.

The fatality was identified as Marissa Cruz of Barangay Bitoon, Daanbantayan. Her six-year-old granddaughter survived, police said.

Cruz and her granddaughter arrived at the beach resort with their family past 11 a.m. for a downtime.

Past noon, relatives noticed Cruz and the girl were missing. They searched the resort for about 30 minutes until they found them stuck in a manhole near the sea.

Cruz and the girl were rushed to the Daanbantayan District Hospital but Cruz was declared dead on arrival at 12:55 p.m. Her granddaughter was treated for wounds in the lower part of her body.

Initial investigation showed that the manhole was only covered with a bamboo table and there was no warning sign.

The Medellin Police Station has yet to complete its investigation on the incident, and it will determine the beach resort management’s liability.
