Daanbantayan, Cebu Mayor Sun Shimura on Monday confirmed he has tested positive for novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
In a statement posted on the Facebook page of the Municipality of Daanbantayan, Shimura said he was informed that he contracted the dreaded viral respiratory disease after his test result came out on June 21.
Prior to exhibiting coronavirus symptoms, Shimura said he attended meetings and other activities in his town after his rapid test, which was conducted on June 15, showed he was negative for the virus.
On June 17, the mayor said he traveled to Mandaue City to attend a meeting with Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia and other mayors.
He said he experienced fever and cough on June 18 and had a swab test on June 20.
Shimura said he has ordered for a one-week suspension of the Mayor’s office operation. The entire Daanbantayan Municipal hall will also undergo disinfection.
The mayor expressed confidence he will be able to recover from the disease.
