MANILA, Philippines – The death toll in the province of Iloilo due to the onslaught of typhoon Ursula has risen to 12, local authorities said on Thursday.

Citing information from municipal disaster offices in Iloilo, a report on UNTV News Ito ang Balita said seven of the fatalities were from Batad, four from Balasan, and one from Carles. Most of the victims died of drowning.

Nine people were also reported missing.

Batad is being considered to be placed under a state of calamity after Ursula affected 12,000 individuals and destroyed hundreds of houses in 24 barangays.

Affected families are currently taking shelter in evacuation centers.

“I-recommend namin sa aming sangguniang bayan na magdeclare kami ng state of calamity within the 24 barangay namin,” Batad Mayor Elvira Alarcon said.

According to Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., most of the municipalities pummeled by Ursula sustained heavy damages, with some still without electricity.

Residents are also in need of assistance.

“Ang kailangan dito ang kuryente at ang relief operations pagkatapos niyan ang priority kung anong mga damage to infrastructure na pwedeng tulungan,” he said.

The Iloilo governor said the restoration of affected transmission lines is ongoing.

He added that they are planning to recommend the declaration of a state of calamity in eight cities and municipalities ravaged by the typhoon. – RRD (with details from Correspondent Lalaine Moreno)
