TikTok is a treasure trove when it comes to unearthing new beauty tips and tricks, and the latest unexpected beauty hack to go viral might just have you rethinking your face serum.
TikTok user Katilyn Boyer (@katilynroundtree) recently used the Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 moisturizing serum from The Ordinary, and tested it out as a moisturizing hair mask. She documented the results after using the serum in her hair every day for two weeks and shared her results on the social media app.

This serum is billed as having a formulation that combines "low, medium, and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid" to retain moisture, along with vitamin B5 for enhanced hydration. While it's normally used topically on the face, Boyer got creative and decided to put the serum's hydrating abilities to the test on her hair as well.
Boyer explained that she saw another TikTok video that said hair oil doesn't actually moisturize your hair, and was inspired to try the water-based hyaluronic acid serum as an alternative.
She went on to show her results after one day, two days and after two weeks, before she revealed that she noticed a "major difference" in her hair's appearance. The video quickly went viral and soon racked up more than 3.5 million views.
What shoppers have to say
Shoppers are also loving the serum for its skin and hair benefits, with Deciem reviewers giving the product a rating of 4.2 stars.
One user wrote: "I’ve been using this for about four days now and I see a big difference. I use it every morning and night and my skin has never felt better. My skin is very sensitive so I can’t really use many products, but this has made my skin feel so nice."
"This serum has made my skin so much more hydrated," shared another. "I have very dry skin and my skin stays and looks moisturized throughout the entire day... This serum is a game changer!"
Like TikTok users, some shoppers have also praised the serum for use on their skin and hair.
"Love it! It does a wonderful job of moisturizing my face and hair and both are very dry. I add 3 drops to my leave in conditioner after I shower and I’ve noticed a huge difference in the texture of my hair, and of course it has helped my extremely dry skin stay hydrated," another user wrote.
Despite the many positive reviews, some users have noted that The Ordinary's Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Hydrating Serum can pill under makeup, meaning you may want to save this serum for fresh-faced days. The brand also recommends applying 2-3 drops of the Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 onto damp skin and allowing it to fully absorb before the next product for best results.
The affordable serum seems to be a big hit among shoppers as well as on social media. Many of its fans are loving the skincare product for dry skin, in addition to it also making a huge difference to hair.
As with any beauty product there's no guarantee that it will work for everyone, but given its $7 price tag, it's certainly a steal. You can give The Ordinary's Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Hydrating Serum a try on your face (or your hair!) along with more of their most popular products below.
