DepEd To Introduce New Curriculum

MANILA, Philippines --- The Department of Education (DepEd) will introduce a new curriculum for incoming Grade 2 and Grade 8 students in the country's public elementary and high schools this coming June as part of its K-to-12 Basic Education Program.

During the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signing ceremony yesterday, Wednesday, between the DepEd and UNIONBANK of the Philippines for the integration of UNIONBANK's Learning System to the national curriculum, Luistro said Grades 2 and 8 students for the incoming school year will be using a new curriculum based on K-to-12 Basic Education Curriculum Standards and Competencies.

"This particular engagement comes at a very important segment in our journey towards reforms," Luistro said. With the K-to -12 one step away from becoming a law, he explained that the DepEd is very much engaged in the next years implementation of the K-to-12 specifically in teachers training and production of materials.

According UNIONBANK Chairman and CEO Justo Ortiz, aside from improving the literacy of pupils, the program aims to instill values education among young children. "We feel that at the end of the day, values formation becomes a very important foundation in the future, and that's why more investment should be put into it," he said. (Ina Hernando-Malipot)
