DepEd launches website for Palarong Pambansa 2012

By Alexander Villafania

PASIG CITY, METRO MANILA—In  an effort to spur interest among Filipinos regarding the Palarong Pambansa 2012, the Department of Education (DepEd) has activated a website ( specifically for the upcoming event.

This will be the first time that DepEd launched a website for the annual Palaro, which is attended by some 10,000 student athletes in different sporting categories.

The website will post updates regarding each event and corresponding venues, including a photo gallery featuring the athletes.

The department will activate online video streaming for some of the sports, with some of the video clips to be kept online for replays.

This year’s Palarong Pambansa will happen in several locations in Pangasinan, primarily in Lingayen, from May 6 to 12. The budget for this year is pegged at P205.3 million.

DepEd has also promised that the event will also focus on environment-related policies such as banning of styrofoam and plastics within player and audience areas.

DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro stated earlier that the Palaro must develop sportsmanship and camaraderie among student athletes, as well as respect for the environment.

Luistro also emphasized on honesty among participating players and their schools to avoid untoward controversies.

In fact, the DepEd is implementing strict rules on athletes’ screening procedures, especially to discourage participation of under- or over-aged players.
