DepEd plans election task force

Manila, Philippines --- The Department of Education (DepEd) will set up an Election Task Force (ETF) Operation Center to ensure that teachers will be provided with adequate information, technical and legal assistance while performing their duties as members of Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) in the May 13 national and local elections.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said the ETF will be set up in the Bulwagan ng Karunungan at the DepEd Central Office in Pasig City starting 1 p.m. of May 12 until 12 noon of May 14.

Aside from teachers who will serve as BEI members, the DepEd ETF will also assist principals, supervisors, schools division/city superintendent and other DepEd employees who will participate in the coming automated elections.

"The ETF shall also serve as DepEd's institutional link to volunteer organizations, individuals, as well as partner agencies involved in the elections," Luistro said.

Around 240,000 public school teachers are expected to man the election precincts during the May 13 polls. To help these teachers, the ETF will be manned by 146 individuals headed by the Steering Committee to be led by DepEd Undersecretary for Legal and Legislative Affairs Albert Muyot as chairman and Undersecretary for Regional Operations Rizalino Rivera as co-chairman.

The ETF will be divided into eight sub-groups which will include the Operations Unit; Communications Unit; Call Center Monitoring and Database Unit; Logistics and Support Unit, Teachers Defense, Legal and Technical Unit; Secretariat, External Coordination Unit; and a Medical Unit.
