MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) has ordered the creation of the Tech-Voc Unit under the Bureau of Secondary Education (BSE) in preparation for the implementation of the Senior High School component of the K to 12 Basic Education Program.
"Tech-Voc education as an important component in the K to 2 Basic Education Program shall be institutionalized in the secondary curriculum," said Education Secretary Armin Luistro.
The institutionalization process for Tech-Voc education would start with the modeling of Grade 11, specifically covering the tech-voc areas in Fisheries, Agriculture, etc. in the 23 public technical-vocational high schools beginning SY 2012-2013, he said.
Luistro the functions of the newly created Unit "will include strengthening the existing tech-voc public high schools in terms of its curriculum, teachers, and management training, infrastructure, facilities, and other relevant assistance for these schools."
"It will also initiate, formulate and develop strategies, policies, and guidelines pertaining to the conceptualization, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the modeling and offering of technical-vocational courses in Grades 11 and 12," Luistro said.
The Tech-Voc unit will coordinate with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for the curricular offerings and the process of awarding National Competency Levels I to IV and Certificates of Competency for teachers and students.
"It will also establish partnerships/linkages with prospective stakeholders in public and private agencies as well as international institutions for the implementation of better-equipped tech-voc schools that delivers standards curriculum," he said.
