MANILA, Philippines – Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año on Tuesday announced he tested positive for novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In a statement, Año said he was informed that he contracted the dreaded illness after receiving his test result from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM). He took the test on March 27.

He said he immediately went on a 14-day self-quarantine on March 26 after learning that four persons he had associated with tested positive for coronavirus.

“I make this announcement to call the attention of all persons I had close contact with to go on self-quarantine and observe any symptoms, in accordance with DOH guidelines,” he said.

He, however, assured that he is okay and he is not showing symptoms.

“I will continue my quarantine and work from home,” he said.

“The result of my test will not in any way dampen my spirit and energy to do my job,” he added.

The DILG chief also reiterated the government’s advice to the public to stay at home and follow social distancing rules to prevent the further spread of the virus.

“Your strong commitment will help defeat the virus. Thank you for your support, and God bless us all,” he said.

Año is the first Cabinet member to contract coronavirus.
