* WARNING! Spoilers for Dirty John below *

The second season of anthology series Dirty John has been announced as being called

The Betty Broderick Story. It will follow the shocking true story of seemingly perfect Californian suburban housewife Betty, whose gritty divorce ended in a double murder.

In 1983, Betty accused her lawyer husband Dan Broderick, with whom she had five children, of having an affair with his new legal assistant Linda Kolkena. After initially calling her "crazy", he moved out of their marital home two years later to be with Linda; taking custody of their children after Betty dumped then one by one on his doorstep.

A long, unpleasant and drawn-out divorce proceeded, with Broderick vs. Broderick becoming one of the most controversial divorces in US history - particularly due to the legal implications of Betty working to support Daniel while he completed his law degree.

Their separation was eventually finalised in 1989, and by this time, Betty's behaviour had become irrational and violent, and she was ignoring restraining orders that prohibited her from setting foot on his property. Seven months after Dan and Linda were married, Betty purchased a gun, entered the newlywed's home and shot them both execution style.

Amanda Peet will play Betty, while Christian Slater will star as Daniel, her ill-fated husband.

Season one of Dirty John was adapted from the critically-acclaimed Los Angeles Times podcast of the same name by journalist Christopher Goffard, which launched on Netflix earlier this year. It tells the true story of sociopath, serial stalker and con-artist extraordinaire John Meehan, and his unsuspecting victim interior designer and mother Debra Newell.

John Meehan was eventually killed in self-defence by Debra's daughter Terra.

Meanwhile, NBC has ordered a new companion docu-series investigating the real life Dirty John, John Meehan, which will feature one-to-one interviews with the people that he deceived, much like Netflix's hit documentary Abducted in Plain Sight.

Dirty John followed the deception, betrayal and con-artistry of criminal John after he met Debra on a dating website and seduced her with his delusions of grandeur. After alienating her from her family in his efforts to control and dominate her, Debra discovered that he had a history of drug abuse and restraining orders against him from former partners. When she broke off their whirlwind and tumultuous relationship - they were married and had moved in together within months - he managed to manipulate her into taking him back. And then things turned really ugly...
