Implementation of UHC law in Cebu set on Jan. 9

HEALTH Secretary Francisco Duque III is set to lead the launch of the implementation of the Universal Health Care (UHC) Law in Cebu on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020.

Cebu Province is among the 33 local government units in the country chosen as pilot areas for the rollout of the UHC Law.

The Cebu Provincial Government will receive P4.2 billion from the National Government for the law’s implementation.

On February 20, 2019, President Rodrigo Duterte signed the UHC Law (Republic Act 11223), which grants health coverage to all Filipinos.

The law intends to automatically enroll every Filipino in the National Health Insurance Program, which will be handled by the Philippine Health Insurance Corp.

According to an earlier report, the Cebu Provincial Government had planned to use P1.9 billion of the P4.2 billion to upgrade 16 provincial and district hospitals.

The launching will be held at the Capitol’s social hall. Central Visayas Health Director Jaime Bernadas, Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Dino and other officials will attend the event. (HBL/KAL)
