THE Department of Labor and Employment Central Visayas (DOLE 7) has lifted the cease and desist order it issued against the Sugar Pulverizing Department of Universal Robina Corp. (URC) in Mandaue City.

The cease and desist order was issued following the death of worker Stephen Corilla last June 2.

Corilla was cleaning a pulverizing machine at the URC plant in Barangay Tabok, Mandaue City when it “accidentally turned on” while he was still inside it.

Marites Mercado, head of the Tri-City Field Office of DOLE 7, said Monday, June 20, that the company was already able to repair the defective machine and it had passed the inspection conducted by labor inspectors on June 17, 2022.

Mercado also said that URC has provided Corilla’s family financial assistance.

URC said last June 14 that it already paid the P100,000 fine imposed by the DOLE after Corilla’s death.

The Gokongwei-led firm also disclosed the incident and the DOLE’s actions before the Philippine Stock Exchange last week.
