Dole waiting for URC to submit safety reports before lifting stoppage order

THE stoppage order issued by the Department of Labor and Employment in Central Visayas (DOLE 7) against the Universal Robina Corporation’s (URC) sugar pulverizing department in Mandaue City will only be lifted once the company complies with the mandated Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHS).

Marites Mercado, DOLE Tri-City field office chief, told SunStar Cebu on Sunday, June 12, 2022, that they are now waiting for the company to submit the requirements proving it has already complied with the OSHS guidelines.

If the company can prove that it has already addressed the danger in its workplace, then the DOLE 7 would recommend the lifting of the stoppage order, Mercado said.

Meanwhile, Mercado reiterated that the investigation conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation and the Mandaue City Police Office on the incident is separate from the DOLE’s scope.

The DOLE 7 has issued a stoppage order against the URC’s sugar pulverizer machine operations after it found in its investigation that the interlock safety device of the machine was defective.

The defective interlock safety device allegedly caused the death of one of the plant’s factory workers, Stephen Corilla.

Corilla died on the afternoon of June 2 while cleaning the company’s pulverizing machine after it accidentally turned on while he was inside it.
