The Cebu provincial government on Sunday night appealed to residents not to fall for a supposed text message claiming a magnitude-8 quake may hit the region.
In a post on its social media accounts, the provincial government advised residents to ignore such messages and not to forward them.
"IGNORE THIS TEXT. DO NOT PASS IT FORWARD. Let’s just be prepared amidst the ongoing aftershocks," it said.
"Circulating this text message will not help and can even cause more panic," it added.
Besides, it said Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council OIC Neil Angelo Sanchez pointed out earthquakes "cannot be predicted as to where and when it will occur."
Cebu is one of the areas reeling from the effects of a magnitude-7.2 quake that hit Central Visayas last Oct. 15.
In the meantime, the provincial government asked the public to get official information from agencies like the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Also, it said it is "constantly monitoring the situation and will keep you updated." – KDM, GMA News
