DPS: 180 tons of trash collected after Sinulog

MORE than 180 tons of garbage were collected by the Cebu City Department of Public Services (DPS) from the streets on Monday, Jan. 16, 2023, a day after the Sinulog Grand Parade and Ritual Showdown at the South Road Properties (SRP) and fiesta masses in honor of the Child Jesus at the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño.

DPS head John Paul Gelasque said they finished the clean-up activity at 6 a.m. on Monday after eight hours of clearing the roads in the SRP and uptown and downtown areas of Cebu City of trash left by people who took part in the festivities.

The clean-up activity was participated by 1,300 street cleaners from the DPS, Parks and Playground Commission, City Environment and Natural Resources Office and other departments.

Gelasque said the collected trash weighing a total of 181.4 tons were mostly composed of plastic bottles, styrofoam food containers and plastic bags, among others.

The DPS head said there were less garbage in the SRP than in the uptown and downtown areas of Cebu City.

“Nagtuo mi nga bulk sa basura didto sa SRP kay didto man ang Sinulog karon sa among pagpanglimpyo ang bulk naa sa city proper. Naka-penetrate mi og tarong alas 10 na sa gabii tungod sa kabaga sa mga tawo gikan sa SRP,” Gelasque explained.

(We thought that the bulk of trash was in SRP where the Sinulog was held, but during the actual clean-up the bulk [of waste] was in the city proper. We were only able to penetrate the area at 10 p.m. due to the large number of people in the SRP).

During the cleaning operations, the DPS asked the help of the Cebu City Police Office to disperse the crowd having street parties in places such as Gen. Maxilom Ave. Juana Osmeña St. and Osmeña Blvd. so they can properly park their garbage trucks.

This year’s activity yielded more garbage than during the 2020’s Sinulog Festival, during which 131 tons of trash were collected. (PAC / TPT)
