THE construction of 11 isolation facilities for Covid-19 patients and off-site dormitories for medical frontliners undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7 is now “substantially” complete.
In an interview Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020, DPWH 7 Director Edgar Tabacon said the P294 million worth of projects was already 95 to 100 percent complete.
Tabacon said some of the contractors requested the DPWH 7 to thoroughly inspect the facilities and inform them what they must do to finish the facilities.
The isolation centers and dormitories only need furnishing and clearing of discarded materials.
Tabacon has yet to set the date for the inspection of the 11 facilities.
However, Tabacon said the DPWH 7 will turn over the facilities to the local government units where these are located only after the final inspection and remaining works are over.
Four of the 11 projects are for medical frontliners; these facilities will add 208 beds for them. This is the same number of existing beds in off-site dormitories for medical workers attending to patients infected with coronavirus disease 2019 in Cebu.
A total of 301 additional beds will also be added for the seven isolation facilities and quarantine centers for Covid-19 patients.
The DPWH 7 initially targeted to finish constructing the facilities by the end of July. But the deadline was not met due to delayed delivery of shipping container-type materials, the facilities’ structural design.
The projects are six clusters of off-site dormitories with a budget of P84 million for medical personnel inside the Cebu City Quarantine Center (CCQC) compound at North Reclamation Area in Cebu City, the P13 million isolation facility for Covid-19 patients in the CCQC compound, the off-site dormitories worth P28 million for medical personnel, and two isolation facilities worth P26 million for Covid-19 patients in the Hoops Dome compound in Lapu-Lapu City.
The other projects include two isolation facilities worth P26 million for positive asymptomatic personnel of the DPWH 7 inside its compound at the South Road Properties, the off-site dormitories for the medical personnel inside the DPWH 7 compound with a budget of P42 million, and the temporary conversion of the evacuation center in Barangay Apas, Cebu City into a quarantine facility worth P3.5 million.
The DPWH 7 also initiated the repair of the Women’s Center in Sitio Sudlon, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City for the provincial police personnel, construction of the isolation facility for patients and dormitory for medical personnel in the Mactan-Cebu International Airport compound in Lapu-Lapu City, and building the isolation facility in the Cebu North Bus Terminal compound in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City worth P15 million.
The DPWH central office funded all the projects. (WBS)
