DPWH 7 seeks P4 Billion budget to build more SRP roads, bridge

AN OFFICIAL of the Department of Public Works and Highways Central Visayas (DPWH 7) said they are still seeking around P4 billion in funds from the National Government to open new roads and build bridges connecting South Road Properties (SRP) to coastal barangays in the south district.

DPWH 7 Director Edgar Tabacon said this is aimed to divide the number of vehicles that go all the way through Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR) and divert the flow of traffic to other roads.

Tabacon said one of the roads they plan to open will be intended for vehicles coming from the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX).

From CCLEX, those who are not bound for Talisay City will be able to travel straight to Cebu City without going through F. Vestil Street which is projected to be congested in the near future due to the ongoing development of the SRP.

Another road will be built at the back of the SRP opposite barangays Mambaling and Basak San Nicolas to decongest traffic at the CSCR as this will lead directly to a second Cebu City-Talisay bridge that would be among those to be constructed by the DPWH 7, Tabacon said.

Three more bridges will connect SRP and Pardo, SRP and Cabreros, and SRP and Talisay to ease the flow of traffic, he added.

“Exit areas for vehicles coming from CCLEX through the back of the SRP will go to Mambaling, exit going to Pardo, Cabreros Mambaling and then there will also be one going to Talisay. Traffic along Vestil St. will be minimized because we will have more roads,” Tabacon explained in a mix of Cebuano and English.

Tabacon said the plan needs help from other sectors that will benefit from it as the DPWH still has to defend this before Congress for the needed funds to be included in next year’s General Appropriations Act.

The DPWH 7 official said like it or not, more and more vehicles will be passing through the CSCR due to the presence of giant real estate developers at the SRP.

The opening of new roads and the construction of bridges at the SRP form part of an additional project proposed by the DPWH 7 as work has started on a rotunda at the CSCR which will shorten the travel time of motorists to Cebu City and Talisay.

The rotunda is being built at the corner of F. Vestil St. near SM Seaside City Cebu. Once done, motorists will no longer have to use the designated u-turn viaducts at the SRP.
