THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-Central Visayas is supporting the ongoing blood donation campaign in the region, as it has provided food packs to blood donors.
In a statement Monday, July 20, 2020, the agency said a total of 399 food packs, worth P159,193, were given to donors during the first three days of the blood-letting campaign.
The blood-letting campaigns were held in Mandaue City last July 10 and 19, and in Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City last July 16.
DSWD-Central Visayas Director Rebecca Geamala thanked the blood donors, whom she referred to as heroes.
"These people, they are also in need, but they choose to give more by donating blood. The food packs we gave them is nothing compared to what they shared -- and we are all participating in helping one another," she said.
The blood-letting campaign is a joint initiative of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas and the Department of Health (DOH)-Central Visayas, supported by the DSWD-Central Visayas and Armed Forces of the Philippines.
It aims to supply the possible lack of blood in blood banks in the region.
It also aims to support the cause of Convalescent Plasma Therapy, a kind of therapy that helps boost the immune system of Covid-19 patients.
A blood-letting activity was also done Monday, July 20, in Talisay City, while another blood donation drive is scheduled on July 23-24 in Balamban, Cebu.
Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, of the DOH-Central Visayas, said the campaign garnered a total of 321 bags of blood already: Hoops dome - 171 bags; Police Regional Office 7 - 30: Paknaan, Mandaue City - 110, and Talisay City - 10. (WBS with PR)
