Dumanjug mayor inks hog-raising deal for constituents

THE local government unit (LGUs) of Dumanjug in southwest Cebu has partnered with a feed manufacturing company for a livestock production program that would benefit its constituents.

On Monday, August 1, 2022, Dumanjug Mayor Efren Guntrano “Gungun” Gica signed a memorandum of agreement with UNAHCO representative Clenn Talaman for the said undertaking.

Under the program, the Univet Nutrition & Animal Healthcare Company (UNAHCO), manufacturer of Pigrolac feeds, will be giving piglets and other livestock products, including vitamins, to the chosen beneficiaries for their business startup.

UNAHCO will also provide technical support to the beneficiaries by giving them tips on how to properly take care of their pigs and ensure their viability through the implementation of biosecurity and health protocols in their business.

“We will provide technical research and we will take care of the seminars in the municipalities or barangays,” said Joey Clenn Talaman, feed sales representative of UNAHCO.

“We will be monitoring the health of the swine through our technicians so as to prevent deaths,” Talaman added.

The beneficiaries must first attend a hog raising seminar to qualify for the program.

Gica revealed that the municipality has 37 barangays wherein majority of the residents are raising hogs in their backyards.

Gica said he was hoping that other LGUs under the seventh district such as Alcantara, Alegria, Badian, Ginatilan, Malabuyoc, Moalboal and Ronda would follow suit.

“We will appeal to our neighboring local government units to implement a program such as this so that farmers will be taught how to properly handle and manage their farm. This will help them avoid wasting their time and effort,” Gica said.

The program beneficiaries will receive male and female piglets for breeding, and will in turn over the same set of piglets to another beneficiary once their female pig already gives birth.

"Kining maong proyekto haum kaayo tungod kay ang atong mga mag-uuma apektado gyud human sa paghaguros ni Bagyong Odette," Gica said.

(This project is timely as this will help our farmers who were affected by typhoon Odette).

The mayor added that the project will also educate the beneficiaries on how to prevent their animals from getting infected by the African Swine Fever. (BBT, TPT)
